The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months should be vaccinated for the flu annually.
Getting the flu shot on a yearly basis is important because the strains of influenza are changing and adapting every year. Also, studies have shown that the body’s immunity to influenza diminishes naturally as time passes. The immunity the body has built up from last year’s strain might not protect you from this year’s mutation of the virus. Each year, the vaccination is altered to accommodate the new strain of influenza that is circulating.
By getting vaccinated annually, you greatly decrease the chance of getting the flu virus. You also help prevent the spread of the flu. This is very helpful if you have a child that is too young to be vaccinated, or take care of a sick loved one.
Getting the shot as early as it becomes available is highly recommended by the CDC. Flu immunizations start in September and continue throughout the rest of the flu season.
You can not get the flu from the flu shot. The viruses that are present in the shot are killed (inactivated). Some minor side effects that could occur are: aches, fever, soreness, or redness where the shot was administered. If these problems arise, they begin quickly after getting the shot and only last 1–2 days.
